Upgrading Lifter in a Sewing Cabinet

612mm wide - both mechanical and electrical.
692mm Wide - Both Mechanical and electric
860mm wide - Electric Only.
How to measure your table for a lifter: The lifters are side-mounted. The gap between the left side and the right side is the critical measurement.
If the space is approximately 2-3mm within one of these lifters measurements, then this lifter would fit as a replacement. If there is not a lifter that fits exactly, but you have access to a handy person they may be able to modify the space so one of the lifters will work. Sometimes some simple spacers can work well to make it fit.
We highly recommend upgrading to an electric sewing machine lifter option. In today’s world, electric lifters provide a far easier and more convenient solution compared to traditional manual systems. They operate smoothly at the touch of a button, requiring no pushing, lifting, or manual guidance from the user. They also come with memory position for easy setting for flat sewing positions. Can I upgrade my sewing cabinet to an electric lift? Yes, if it is a Horn cabinet less than 6 years there is a very good chance it is a simple swap. If the brand is not Horn and/or an older unit, measuring the gap is critical. See above for instructions. If a suitable lifter does not fit directly, maybe the cabinet could be modified to accommodate one.
How do I measure a sewing cabinet lifter? Measure the Gap of the lift side to the right side. Follow the instructions and diagram above.
Can an old sewing cabinet be modernised? Yes. In many cases, older sewing cabinets can be upgraded with a modern sewing machine lifter, depending on the cabinet’s size and construction. What is the difference between mechanical and electric sewing cabinet lifters? Mechanical sewing cabinet lifters are operated manually using springs, levers, gas struts, or pedals to raise and lower the sewing machine. How to Repair an Gas Strut Lifter? The main thing to be aware of is the Gas Strut is extremely strong and cannot be moved by hand. The best method to replacing pulleys etc is to remove the Sewing machine platform, and move lifter to the lower position. Then first jam a chock of wood into the lifter while lifter is in lower position. Jam a chock between Gas Strut and edge of frame, as in diagram below.
This will stop gas struct from fully expanding. When lifting lift back up, the wires will become lose as struct is no longer doing anything. You can remove side rails, this allows you to be able to remove carriage from the rails and replace components. Horn sells all the pulleys etc for mechanical lifter in the Accessories section. We only recommend replacing strut if you have mechanical leverage tools to be able to suppress it. We suggest taking photos as you go to ensure you can reassemble correctly. Only tackle repairing this if you have mechanical ability.
If I swap over my lifter can I use same platform: Yes, if you are able to change your lifter, you should use your current platform. It may require using self-tapping screws and an electric drill to mount, as the old platform may not align with new lifter.
Why has my gas strut sewing cabinet lifter lost strength? Gas lifters like anything has a lifetime, and will lose its strength after a long period. Surprisingly they do last longer than what most would expect.
How do I replace a sewing machine lifter? When buying a lifter, it will come with step by step instructions how to replace. Lifter can be installed directly into the main machine space allocated for machine platform. The lifter normally can be replaced without disassembling the whole cabinet.
Can I order inserts for flat sewing? Absolutely. We carry profiles for most sewing machine models and can custom cut an insert to suit your machine and cabinet. If you have an older machine that we do not already have a profile for, we provide instructions on how to trace the machine profile so we can create a suitable insert. Accurate measurements of the cabinet cut-out, along with clear photos, are required to ensure we produce the correct insert for your setup.
